Chile Peru agreement
Two young Chilean men, arrested after graffiti was spray painted on an Inca wall in the Peruvian city of Cusco have been allowed to return home after six months of detention following an historic cultural agreement worth a hundred thousand dollars. This report from Clinton Porteous:
Listen to the story The two Chileans arrived home from six months in detention after a Peruvian judge dismissed all the charges and allowed them to leave. The boy who spray painted graffiti on an Inca wall had been charged with damaging Peruvian national heritage and was facing up to eight years in jail. The other had been charged with being his accomplice. The director of Foundation Ideas in Chile, Francisco Estevez, said it was a breakthrough agreement between the two nations. He said the one hundred thousand dollars would be used to protect historic sites in Cusco where the incident occurred and also fund cultural and student exchanges between Chile and Peru. He said he hoped the agreement would serve to lower the levels of xenophobia between the countries.
Traditionally Peru and Chile have a poor relationship and often there is often antagonism between the people. Peruvians who come to Chile to work often complain of discrimination in the work place. The detention of the two Chileans in Cusco was just the latest source of tension.
Mr Estevez said the one hundred thousand dollars will be paid in three instalments with the final payment due in July next year. He said a Swiss based foundation promoting sustainable development and human equality in the region had already promised to pay the first instalment of forty thousand dollars.
