HSK Curettage: What to Expect

HSK curettage is a procedure in which abnormal tissue is carefully removed from the uterine lining, usually with hysteroscopic guidance so the surgeon can see exactly what they are working with. Patients who search this term are typically trying to figure out whether they are a candidate, what the procedure actually feels like, and how long they will be sidelined afterward.

What Does HSK Curettage Actually Involve

The procedure starts with a short hysteroscopic look. A thin camera passes through the cervix, and the surgeon maps the lining, spots any polyps, irregular patches, or areas of abnormal growth. Once the target zone is confirmed, a small curette gently shaves away the tissue. The entire session usually runs twenty to thirty minutes, and most patients are home by mid-afternoon, often still in the same gown they walked in wearing.

Recovery is where the uncertainty spikes. Mild cramping and light spotting for two or three days are part of the normal picture. Avoid tampons, douching, and intercourse for roughly a week while the endometrium reseals. Heavy bleeding that soaks a pad within an hour, or a fever over 38 °C, should trigger a same-day phone call to your clinic.

Who Is a Candidate for This Procedure

Not every bout of irregular bleeding warrants a curettage. The procedure is most often recommended when imaging or hysteroscopy has already flagged submucosal polyps, focal endometrial hyperplasia, or precancerous changes that need clean excision. Postmenopausal women in their late forties and fifties presenting with persistent spotting form a large share of referrals.

On the younger side, women dealing with heavy, unpredictable periods that have not calmed down after a course of hormonal medication may also be offered the procedure. It thins the lining, stops the bleeding, and lets the pathologist examine the tissue to rule out anything hidden. Your OB-G will factor in your age, symptom pattern, and whether preserving future fertility matters to you before locking in the plan.

Bring a short list of questions to your pre-op visit and ask the surgeon to walk you through the specific steps for your case. Knowing exactly what will happen, in what order, strips away most of the anxiety that builds up in the days before the appointment.
